Following the successful launch of Harlesden hub, Brent Libraries are redeveloping Harlesden Library Plus to create a flexible cultural space with artwork, a heritage display and event facilities designed and curated by the local community.

The redevelopment aims to help the building adapt to better support the varied offer of the Hub, create an engaging space for cultural events, and to meet the changing needs of the community in Harlesden.

Proposal

Brent Libraries are inviting artists to create two new community murals for Harlesden Library Plus.

The first piece of artwork (the Community mural) will be themed around the Harlesden community with ideas generated from open community workshops. The community workshops will take place throughout the summer and will target a variety of groups and provide opportunity for cross generational work. The mural will hang alongside a curated heritage display with multiple exhibitions.

The second work will highlight our Black Interest material in the library. It will involve working with our partners in curating the space, the Black Interest, Identity and Information Zone (BIIIZ). The artist will work with BIIIZ on a theme which will incorporate national and global black icons and inspirational figureheads. The piece will be hung opposite the community work and alongside a heritage panel detailing local Black Interest history. The artist will feed into the Community mural to allow for harmony between both artworks.

The community workshops will take place over the summer months. Both murals will need to be complete in September to be unveiled in October.

Fee
